iv ANNUAL REPORT benefited by the instruction of teacher in whom exact scholarship was happily combined with imagination and by the advice and help of one whose interest in their welfare was not confined to the class-room Sir Israel Gollancz held very distinguished position in the world of letters where his enthusiasm and skill in practical affairs were enlisted in the interests of learning in many projects national and international He was Secretary and Fellow of the British Academy since its foundation and the moving spirit behind the Shakespeare Association and the scheme to erect and endow National Theatre He was corresponding member of the Royal Spanish Academy and of the Medieval Academy of America and Honorary Director of the Early English Text Society The kindest and most genial of men his home was also centre to which literary scholars from foreign countries naturally resorted sure of an enthusiastic welcome But all these interests in the larger world of letters were secondary to his loyalty and devotion to his work and to the College to whose prestige and influence his connection with them made direct con- tribution He lived to see the Department of English Literature grow from small beginnings to its present size and importance He inaugu- rated and developed the Evening Diploma in English Literature and in the work of the Evening Department of which he was Dean he main- tained the warmest interest In the movement which resulted in the incorporation of the non-theological faculties in the University of London he played an active part and the creation and endowment of the Departments of Spanish and Portuguese owed much to his enthu- siastic support To the progress of the College as whole through time of great stress and difficulty to its present size and prosperity he made no small contribution by his wisdom and counsel Ho had no enemies but many friends and by all members of the College his death will be mourned as an irreparable loss 1' Retirements -The following members of the Staff retired at the end of the Session -Professor Ernest Wilson Siemens Professor of Electrical Engineering Dr Gladstone Reader in Anatomy Dr Steppat Reader in German Miss Buchheim Lecturer in German Mr Mackay Mr Bell and Mr Hussey Griffith Lecturers in Law By these retirements some very long and loyal associations with the College are brought to an end Miss Buchheim's father was appointed Professor of German in the College in 1863 and her retirement thus involves the disappearance from the roll of the College Staff of name that has been worthily represented on it for continuous period of over sixty years Mr Mackay has served the College for thirty-eight years as Lecturer in the Faculty of Laws and for many years has acted as its Dean Professor Ernest Wilson has been for forty years member of the teaching staff of the College and by his unsparing devotion to the interests of his students throughout that period has earned unique position in their affections The Delegacy
