FACULTY OF THEOLOGY 279 Examinations that the student can proceed with the course with profit to himself and credit to the College The Dean has the power in exceptional cases to allow student to substitute Logic for Mathematics in the Preliminary Year course In such cases the student cannot sit for the London Matriculation and is therefore debarred from reading for the University Degree and can obtain the Diploma only Students who have not passed the London Matriculation or an equivalent may in the second place make application to the Theological Board for permission to sit for the College Preliminary Examination which qualifies for admission to the three years' course in Time-tables Syllabus The examination is held in the last days of September and is on the following subjects -Greek Latin English Logic or Mathematics and English or Ancient History and is equivalent to the passing-out examination of the Preliminary Year Such candidates will be expected to show an adequate knowledge of the ground covered by Nunn Elements of New Testament Greek Cambridge Press or book of similar standard and to translate passages from Mark -x with parsing The syllabus of the London Matriculation may be obtained on application to the Secretary to the Matriculation and Schools Examination Council London University South Kensington It should be clearly understood that this Examination is not accepted by the University as an equivalent for Matriculation and does not admit to the Degree course but to the course only that the Theological Board reserves the right of judging each case on its merits and of insisting that candidate shall attempt the University Matriculation if on the ground of age or general attain- ments such course seems desirable in the interests of the candidate and of the College Candidates who desire further information or are contemplating seeking permission to sit for this examination should communicate with the Dean Students who have not passed the London Matriculation or an equivalent but who are over twenty-five years of age and who possess certain specified professional qualifications of which recognised Minister of Religion" is one are allowed by the University to take the Special University Entrance Examination instead of the ordinary Matriculation Mathematics is not compulsory and New Testament Greek may be offered Full particulars will be sent on application The effect of this concession is to make the University Degree much more easily obtainable by those who already hold the Diploma and by all men in Holy Orders The Student who has passed matriculation or one of the equivalent examinations recognised by the University may take either The combined course for and Degree or-
