230 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING Chattock Tilting Manometer Apparatus for Experimental Applied Mathematics Engineering Workshops The Workshops comprise Carpenter's Shop Fitting Turning and Machine Tool Shops and Smith's Shop All machines are driven by electric power and ample facilities are provided for complete instruction in all hand and machine tools The equipment has been largely increased and improved Preliminary Workshop Training Four-Weeks' Course has been arranged for First-Year Students viz The last week of the Christmas Vacation the last or first two weeks of the Easter Vacation and the last week of the Summer Term -hours 10 to and to Mondays to Fridays inclusive charge of Ā£4 4s is made for use of tools and materials This Course will count as part of the four months' practical training for endorsement on the College Certificate or Diploma Students are strongly advised to take this course as preparation both for their work in the Engineering Laboratory and for the Training for at least one year in Mechanical Works recommended by the Institution of Civil Engineers and to assist them in their Engineering Classes to realise the properties of the Materials used and the processes by which they are shaped into Machines and Structures The Courses will be Carpenter's Shop -Planing use of chisel &c joints mortice scarf-dovetail &c Construction of simple models of valves and valve-gears &c such as will be afterwards practically available for working out problems in slide-setting &c wood-turning Machine Shop -Chipping filing scraping scribing block &c Turning planing machine shaping machine slotting machine milling machine screw-cutting grinding &c Extra materials beyond the ordinary Course and damage done to machines or apparatus by the carelessness of Students will be charged for No Regular Student can be admitted into the Workshops at any hours other than those mentioned in the Time-table without pre- vious permission from the Professor and the Dean of the Faculty This sanction will only be given on condition that the applicant is not thereby neglecting other duties in the College No Student can be permitted to occupy the time of or have assistance from any of the workmen out of the regular hours of attendance named in the Calendar Special arrangements may be made for working during vacations The maximum number of Students admitted to this course in any one year is 30 If greater number of applications is received the selection will be based on the results of the Christmas Terminal Examinations
