Vlll ANNUAL REPORT to the Sub-Warden and the Matron for their contribution to the smooth and efficient conduct of the house It has also been of great advantage to the Hostel that Professor Rogers Professor Bicknell and Dr Flint have been in residence throughout the Session Centenary Celebrations The dedication of the Chapel and the opening of the new wing of the Hostel have already been mentioned The visit of the Duke and Duchess of York to the College on June 25th was gracious mark of the interest of His Majesty the King in the fortunes of the College Their Royal Highnesses were received by the Duke of Connaught and the Archbishop of Canterbury The Bishop of London Chairman of the Council and most of the members of the Council were present to welcome the Royal guests In reply to an address the Duke of York dwelt in memorable terms on the past achievements and future oppor- tunities of Bang's College Their Royal Highnesses afterwards inspected the College and spent some time in making acquaintance with its varied activities On June 26th Service of Thanksgiving was held in Westminster Abbey by the kind permission of the Dean The sermon was preached by the Bishop of Gloucester formerly Principal of the College and was attended by very large congregation of past and present members of the College and by representatives of other Universities and Colleges The Chairman of the Council the members of the Council and Staff and Fellows took part in the processions which passed through Dean's Yard from Westminster School Thanks are due to Professor Rogers for his work in arranging the music and to Professor Dearmer for marshalling the processions We are also greatly indebted to the Rev Dr Perkins and the organist of the Abbey for their work in connection with this service The sermon of the Bishop of Gloucester which dealt with the characteristic features of King's College and some lessons which may be drawn from them for the solution of general educational problems was published in the Guardian Other events in the Centenary Celebrations were dinner at which the new Fellows were the guests and reception The successful com- pletion of the Centenary Celebrations is due in no small measure to the enthusiastic work of many members of the College both Staff and students Centenary Fund In the last report the Council drew attention to the needs of the College as they affect the Theological Department and launched an appeal in conjunction with the Delegacy generous response has been made to this appeal The total sum which the Council have received or may hope to receive is at the present time £16 944 This total includes promises as well as donations actually received £4 844 has been allocated by donors to the Hostel £5 596 including £897 for
