ANNUAL REPORT vii Wynn for gifts of books and for an anonymous donation of £150 to provide Bursary of £50 per annum for three years to be awarded at the discretion of the Dean to student in training for Holy Orders Hostel The Hostel has been full during the whole Session and the number of applications has far exceeded the number of rooms available In October 1928 rooms in the vicinity had to be obtained for ten students In January 1929 the building of the new wing was sufficiently advanced to allow the new students' rooms to be used and those who had been living in rooms outside were taken into the Hostel At the present time however it has again been necessary to find rooms in Vincent Square for ten students in spite of the additional accommodation afforded by the new wing There are now 75 residents and the dining hall is not large enough to hold more even if rooms could be found considerable number of applications to come into residence have been refused on the ground of lack of space and it is evident that it would be possible to fill subsidiary Hostel with from 15 to 20 men No way of meeting this need is at present apparent but the Council believing strongly in the value of the Hostel life will keep it steadily in view and seize any opportunity of enlarging the possibilities for residence The new Chapel was dedicated by the Archbishop of Canterbury on June 26th The greater part of the guests assembled in the courtyard and the service in the Chapel was followed by an address by the Bishop of London who welcomed the Archbishop and spoke of the history of the Hostel and the designs of the Council in founding it An inspiring address was delivered by the Archbishop who referred to the functions which such place should fulfil The proceedings were broadcast The Chapel has been in use since April and its value in the devotional life of the Hostel can hardly be over-estimated Beauty and spacious- ness have been secured in spite of the severe limitations imposed by the conditions The new Library has been in use since the end of the Easter Term and has proved great addition to the amenities of the Hostel Some improvements have been made in the arrangements for sports on the roof including covered cricket pitch and punch-ball in frame The entrance way to the main door is being paved and turf is being laid in the courtyard on either side When this work is completed the building will be finished practically as originally designed by Mr Martin and the whole effect is generally agreed to be dignified and graceful Grand Night was held as usual in November An unprecedented number of former Hostellers attended and the event was in every way memorable one because many saw for the first time the dream of completed Hostel in process of coming true The Council express their thanks to the Hostel Committee to the sub-committee particularly to Professor Jenkins and Mr Shovelton
