ANNUAL REPORT xliii successfully concluded An investigation of the formation of sprays suitable for solid injection oil engines was begun in co-operation with the Mechanical Engineering Department and work in connection with the development of new transmission dynamometer was in progress An investigation of flow problem in connection with the induction process of internal-combustion engines was carried out in the Hydraulics Laboratory under the direction of Mr Davies of the Mechanical Engineering Department research on the fluid resistances of aerofoil sections was completed The Professor continued to serve on the Engineering Standards Association's Committee on Cast-iron Pipes Dr Lobban con- tinued his work as Engineer to the new Victoria House in Southampton Row the new building for the University School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine in Gower Street and the extension of the College over Aldwych Station Mr White continued his Hydraulic Research and is co-operating with Mr Davies in an investigation of certain problems in connection with High-speed Heavy Oil Engines The Staff of the Department continued to assist in the teaching of the Geography Department 3-inch falling main has been fitted from tank on the roof of the main College building connected with the 2-inch rising main from the three-stage pump by ball-cock This enables steady head to be obtained for certain hydraulic experiments The 4-inch pump motor has been electrically connected with the variable voltage generator in the Mechanical Engineering Department so that the range of speed for pump and turbine trials has been greatly increased Chattock Tilting Manometer for measuring small differences of hydraulic pres- sure Physical Balance and Zeiss Surveyor's Level were added to the equipment course of three public lectures on Modern Developments of Water Supply was given during the Session by Mr Gourley Eng Inst Department of Mechanical Engineering Two Post-graduate students were working in the Department during the Session of whom presented his thesis for the Sc degree Among the researches in progress in the Department may be men- tioned The Initiation of Plastic Flow in Metals Professor Cook Experiments on High-speed Diesel Engine Mr Davies and Mr White An Investigation into the Conditions Affecting the Formation of Jets Mr Davies and Mr White The most important additions to the equipment of the Laboratory during the Session were An ammonia vapour-compression refrigerating plant equipped with electrical brine heaters for complete tests and also with an ice tank capable of producing 1J cwt of ice per day
