xxxviii ANNUAL REPORT Results of Examinations Four students obtained Second Class Honours in the Special Sc Examination and student gained Pass Degree Higher Degree Ph Miss Sheffield Sc Chromosome Linkage in Enothera with Special Reference to some hybrids '1 which has been accepted for publication in the Proc Roy Soc 105 207-230 pis Researches Mr Tamaki Shimamura Sc of Tokyo Imperial University carried on investigations throughout the Session until May on the cytology of Rumex and has completed paper for publication "Meiosis in Rumex pulcher Journ Roy Micros Soc 49 211-216 pis Mr Fikry Sc carried on research throughout the year on meiosis in certain species of Rumex and Mr Selim was engaged in learning technical methods for the investigation of the cytology of rice Miss Sheffield as Research Assistant to Professor Gates was engaged on further investigations of the chromosome linkage in Oenothera grant for two years was received by Professor Gates from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research for the employment of Miss Κ Goodwin Sc an Honours graduate of the Department as Research Assistant further grant was also received from the Royal Society in connection with the expenses for genetical work carried on in the Royal Botanic Gardens Regent's Park large number of new species-hybrids in Oenothera made last year are being grown this season for further elucidation of the relation between genetical and cytological linkage Chromosome linkage is new and attractive field of research with bearings on many fields of genetics The extensive measurements on size inheritance extending over number of years and reaching total of over 150 000 have now been brought to conclusion but much work still remains in preparing the statistical results for publication It is proposed to publish memoir on size inheritance when the computations are completed Departmental Notes Miss Sheffield was appointed to new post at Rothamsted Agricultural Experiment Station for research on the cytology of virus diseases Dr Cook was appointed Assistant Lecturer in Botany at Bristol University Mr Catcheside who obtained First Class in the Special Sc Examination in 1928 and was awarded the Jelf Medal in Science for that year was appointed Lecturer in Botany at the University of Glasgow The Carter Prize in Botany based on the work of the Session 1928-29 was awarded to Miss Κ Perry
