ANNUAL REPORT XXV11 Mr Nisbet an Honours student in the Department won University Scholarship Mr Edward Sarmiento Hons First Class 1928 was granted the University Post-graduate Studentship and will continue to work with the Head of the Department on the literature of the Counter- Reformation in Spain Mr Whitmore was awarded the Mitchell Scholarship In May Professor Pedro Salinas from the University of Seville and the Centro de Estudios Historicos Madrid delivered short course of lectures on Modern Spanish Writers The Staff and students were glad to welcome in him not only distinguished historian of literature but one of the most interesting of the younger Spanish poets The University of London Spanish Society with its headquarters at King's College met regularly on Tuesdays and under the guidance of Miss Perry produced in Spanish Moratin's comedy El Si de las Ninas which was performed on the stage of the School of Economics Department of Italian Number of Students Occasional Intermediate Pass Honours Total 15 Results of Examinations One student sat for the Pass Examination subsidiary to French and was successful One student entered for the Honours Examination and gained Second Class Department of Portuguese Three Post-graduate students of the University were working during the Session on theses relating to Portuguese history Professor Prestage gave public lectures on Albuquerque" and Francisco Manuel de Mello he also lectured at the Lyceum Club on Aspects of Portuguese Literature and at the Indian Students' Union on The Portuguese in the East He studied the relations of Portugal and Sweden in the seventeenth century and the personality and administration of Pombal especially as described in the correspondence of English Ministers at the Court of Lisbon Mr Bentley has in the press An Account of the Marriage of King Duarte by his Brother Prince Henry the Navigator and he con- tinued work on new edition of the Chronica de Pedro of Fernao Lopes
