annual report XXV Department of German Number of Students The total number of students in the Department during the Session was 117 distributed as follows Intermediate Pass and Subsidiary Honours Post-graduate Science Classes Com Totals Day Evening 17 14 34 16 13 89 28 117 Results of Examinations Of the 12 students who sat for Intermediate Arts 10 passed while the students who took the Sc Econ Intermediate Examination were all successful Only one student took the Honours Examina- tion on this occasion and she obtained Second Class Upper Division This represents the low-water mark for that Examination but it does not truly reflect the present state of the Department as the most noticeable feature is the number of Honours Students in the Day which is far larger than in any previous year and exceptionally high for London College in the subject Higher Degrees Mr Couch obtained the degree of Ph early in the Session the subject of his thesis being Klopstock in England Chapter in Anglo-German Literary Relations Three students were working for higher degrees Miss Kirby for the Ph and Miss Abbott for the while Mr Davis com- pleted under Dr Steppat his thesis on the first phase of Shaw's influence in Germany Departmental Notes The public lectures at the School of Economics in connection with the Com classes were continued Dr Rose again delivering sessional course on German Life and Literature Mr Couch who obtained both his First Class and Ph in the Evening Department was appointed in June to the Head Master- ship of Leyton County High School for Boys Professor Atkins was elected Dean of the University Faculty of Arts under the new constitution of the University The English Goethe Society continued to hold its meetings in the Council Room and the hospitality of the College was again much appreciated by the Society
