xvm ANNUAL REPORT The best utilisation of the space which has been rendered available in the old building has been the subject of very careful consideration The new accommodation has enabled the College to remove some lecture rooms from the basement part of the space vacated it was found possible to adapt for the special purposes of wireless research The greater part has been utilised for the very necessary enlargement and improvement of the Cloak Room accommodation for Women Staff and Students which as matter of urgency was carried out during the summer vacation The transference of the Department of Geology has provided valuable space in less subterranean regions The opportunity will be taken to allow room for the upward expansion of the Library which will eventually benefit both by increased shelf space and also increased accommodation for readers The Laboratories of Botany Zoology and Physiology will gain by additions and altera- tions and various other rearrangements will improve the conditions in other Departments To carry out the changes however demands heavy capital expenditure and it will not be possible to put them all immediately into effect Mention must also be made of the very valuable addition to the resources of the College which the liberal patriotism of the London Electric Railway Company has enabled the College to secure Beneath the new buildings of the East Wing Rifle Range is being constructed which will be both more adequate and also safer than that at present in use During the year the School of Slavonic Studies was transferred from its rooms in the Institute of Historical Research to new quarters at 40 Torrington Square It is very satisfactory also to report the steady reduction of the capital debt upon the College Ground at Mitcham The Union Society is heartily to be congratulated upon the progress made in this direc- tion and it may be hoped that the time is not far distant when the College will be able to tackle the problem of financing the erection of suitable pavilion 14 Hostels The Platanes -The House had its full complement of 73 resident students during the Session King's College Hostel for Women -All the rooms were full at the beginning of the Session and there was substantial waiting list Applications for admission are now so numerous that it will no longer be possible to reserve places for students who have taken their Final Examination and are remaining at College for further year of post- graduate study 15 College Societies and Activities The Centenary Year of the College has proved successful one for the Union Society The ninth Commemoration Week was distinguished by an excellent performance of Wiers-Jenssen's beautiful play The
