ANNUAL BEFORT owe so much It is upon the generosity of past benefactors that the present prosperity of the colleges in our aneient universities has been securely founded and there is no worthier gift which man may offer to his country than the endowment of its great educational institutions That is how this generation can repay the debt which it owes to the past by securing for posterity continued opportunities for acquiring knowledge Upon these two things depends the future of our nation upon the increased mastery of man over natural forces and upon the main- tenance of high standard of education among its citizens Upon the conclusion of the ceremonies in the Great Hall Their Royal Highnesses visited the Wheatstone Laboratory and witnessed some scientific experiments Tea was subsequently served on the Terrace which the authorities of Somerset House had kindly placed at the disposal of the College for the occasion On the evening of June 25th Dinner was held at the Hotel Cecil at which the Delegates and the Fellows elected during the Centenary Year were the guests of the Council and Delegacy On June 26th at the Chapel in the new wing of the Hostel in Vincent Square was dedicated by His Grace the Archbishop of Canterbury After the dedication service His Grace who was eloquently introduced by the Chairman of the Council delivered an address in the quadrangle of the Hostel and formally opened the new wing At 30 Service of Thanksgiving and Commemoration was held in Westminster Abbey at which the preacher was the Right Rev Headlam the Lord Bishop of Gloucester Principal of King's College 1903-12 In the evening Conversazione was held in the College On June 27th there was Garden Party at the College Athletic Ground Lavender Avenue Mitcham the main feature of which was Pageant organised by the Union Society In the evening Dance for members of King's College past and present was held at Australia House and brought the ceremonies to close In connection with the Centenary of the College the Centenary Com- memoration Committee issued an appeal for funds to provide endow- ments for Chairs and Scholarships and to enable the buildings and equipment of the College to be improved The Appeal was launched in letter to The Times of October 22nd 1928 which was signed by Lord Rosebery Chancellor of the University of London the Arch- bishop of Canterbury Visitor of King's College Lord Ullswater Chairman of King's College Centenary Commemoration Committee the Lord Mayor of London the Mayor of the City of Westminster the Right Hon Reginald McKenna and Sir Edward Troup Treasurers of the Centenary Appeal Fund the Principal of King College and the Dean of King's College On February 12th 1929 on the invitation of the Lord Mayor the Council and the Delegacy luncheon was held at the Mansion House at which the speakers were the Lord Mayor the Bishop of Gloucester
