110 FACULTY OF ARTS German Persian Italian Hebrew and Aramaic Spanish Chinese Portuguese Philosophy Scandinavian Languages Psychology Russian and other Slavonic Languages History Indo-Aryan Geography Arabic Anthropology Candidates who have taken the Pass Examination may present themselves for Honours in any one branch after having completed such course of study as the Senate may in each case approve Honours graduates may take second branch after further approved course of study extending over at least one year II -FOR THE DEGREES OF AND Ph Arrangements are made for supervising the studies of graduates of this and other Universities who are admitted as candidates for the higher degrees in Arts of the University of London III -DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Professional Training The course in professional training which extends over one session three terms is open to all men and women graduates of recognised Universities who are accepted by the Professor of Education The course prepares for the Teacher's Diploma Examination of the University of London and is intended for those who wish to teach in Secondary Schools The examination is held in July of each year The work for the Teacher's Diploma includes the study of the Principles and History of Education of Psychology Hygiene and Methods of Teaching Two days week are spent teaching in Secondary Schools and students have preliminary practice for three weeks in Elementary Schools during September The fee for the course is £35 which may be paid in equal terminal instalments on payment of an additional £1 Is in the first term The Department is able to award scholarships each year These scholarships are derived from grants made by the Board of Education and may be awarded in the case of men for the year of professional training and for all or part of the degree course preceding it Students receiving these grants pay no tuition fees and receive in addition maintenance grant of £26 per annum which is increased in the case of those residing in one of the College Hostels Scholarship-holders must undertake to follow the profession of teacher in an approved School Applications for scholarships should be made on special form sent in not later than January lst Selected candidates will be interviewed before February lst
