XXXVI ANNUAL REPORT Open Channels and The Strength of Reinforced Concrete Columns respectively course of three special public lectures was given in the Michaelmas Term by Mr Wentworth-Shields Inst on Harbours and Docks Department of Mechanical Engineering The following research work was being carried out in the Department during the Session An investigation on the failure of ductile materials subjected to compound stress in three dimensions Professor Cook assisted by Ruda An investigation of the effect of overstrain on the modulus of rigidity Professor Cook An investigation of the efficiency of an exhaust heater Professor Cook Mr Geneve Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering resigned his post on being appointed to Chair of Mechanical Engineering in Egypt In place of the Senior Lectureship University Readership in Mechanical Engineering was instituted to which Mr Davies Sc Mech was appointed Professor Cook continued to act as Secretary of Section of the British Association and to serve on the Springs Committee of the Board of Scientific and Industrial Research Mr Geneve continued to serve on the Drawing Office Practice Com- mittee of the Engineering Standards Association course of public lectures on Recent Developments in Hydroelectric Engineering arranged to be given by Mr Seewer were cancelled on account of the lecturer's having to go abroad at short notice Department of Electrical Engineering There were 57 students in the Department 36 in the Second and 19 in the Third Year and were engaged in Post-graduate work Mr Barnes was awarded University Post-graduate Studentship and will continue his research for the degree of Ph during the coming year The subject of his thesis is Non-Thermionic Amplification Mr Bowker was given an extension of his major scholarship and will also continue his work for the degree of Ph for another year He has been appointed by the British Electrical and Allied Industries Research Association to carry out some special research on Spark Potential In his research on the Corrosion Products and Mechanical Properties of Aluminium Alloys The Professor was aided by Mr White The lengthy research on The Minimum Blowing Current of Fusible Cut-outs and The Rating of Copper and Tinned Copper Wires from the Standpoint of Deterioration under Working Conditions carried out by the British Electrical and Allied Industries Research Association was completed during the year An account of this research is contained in the Technical Report of the Association
