xxxiv annual report Department of Physiology The number of students working in the Department was approxi- mately the same as in the Department of Anatomy In October 1925 Professor Halliburton formally opened the extension to the Department which provided accommodation for Organic Chemistry Biochemistry Histology and advanced experi- mental work The opening was attended by many distinguished guests who inspected the Department The additional facilities for work are much appreciated by Staff and students alike Special courses of instruction for advanced students and others were given by Dr Da Fano on The Histology of the Nerve Tissues and Paths of Conduction by Dr Pickering on The Constituents and Coagulation of the Blood Plasma by Dr Hewitt on Carbohydrate Metabolism and by Professor McDowall on The Integration of the Circulation and in conjunction with Dr Hemingway on Mam- malian Physiology These courses were well attended by students of this and other Colleges Professor McDowall and Dr Da Fano also took part in the course of lectures on The History of Science Dr Pickering gave course of lectures in the University of Lausanne Dr de Souza acted as Examiner in Physiology for the primary examination for the Professor McDowall was invited to act as Advisor in Physiology to the newly formed London School of Hygiene for which building the gift of the Rockefeller Foundation is at present being erected At the end of the Session the Department lost the services of its two Demonstrators who went to senior posts elsewhere Dr Hemingway to University College and Dr Reeves to St Bartholomew Hospital Medical School In January the Physiological Society of Great Britain and Ireland held meeting in the Department An extensive programme of demonstrations and communications was carried through and the Society afterwards dined in the Senior Common Room In November the Biochemical Society also held most successful meeting in the Department considerable amount of research work was carried out during the year Dr Reeves and Miss Battie completed work for the degrees of Sc and Sc respectively Dr Reeves as Berridge Scholar also carried out some important experiments relating to the cause of dental decay welcome and new feature of the Department has been the success with which several of the more enthusiastic students have taken part in the researches proceeding in the Department The list of publications indicates the lines along which the researches were assisted by grants from the Royal Society and the Medical Research Council Department of Pharmacology The number of students during the Michaelmas Term was 44 of whom 30 were working for the degree of and 14 for the Examination
