xxxii ANNUAL RErOKT Two public lectures on The Vegetation of the Amazon illustrated by cinema films were afterwards given in the College and an account of the expedition was also presented before the Linnean Society Some of the dry material obtained has been placed in museum cases Much of the material in this Amazon collection is of the greatest service in teaching and it would be gain if it could be properly displayed Meanwhile several additional museum cases have been obtained from the Wembley Exhibition and placed in the botanical corridor Other additions to the equipment of the Department during the Session include photomicrographic apparatus two camera lucidas microdissection apparatus projection lantern and two Zeiss binocular research microscopes One of the latter was purchased by grant of Ā£80 from the Dixon Fund of the University for use by Mr Cook Part-time Demonstrator in Botany in connection with his researches on fungal root parasites Work in the herbarium has been continued and about 000 additional sheets have been mounted During the Session Mrs Ferguson presented her thesis for the degree of Sc entitled The Aloinse-A Cytological Study with Special Reference to the Form and Size of the Chromosomes Her thesis was accepted for publication by the Royal Society Mr Huskins 1851 Scholar from the University of Alberta Canada was engaged in investigation on the cytology and genetics of oats Facilities for growing his plants were provided by the John Innes Horticultural Institution at Merton Miss Sheffield carried on investigations of the chromosomes of Enothera and Mr Solomon of Calcutta University made study of contractile roots Dr Latter acted as Research Assistant to the Professor and as part-time Demonstrator Experiments in genetics chiefly on size inheritance were continued in the Royal Botanic Gardens Regent's Park with the aid of grant from the Royal Society and another from the College FACULTY OF MEDICAL SCIENCE Department op Anatomy The session was one of continued activity in the Department of Anatomy About 300 students followed regular and special courses leading to various examinations Of this number approximately half were reading for the Medical Degree of the University of London The remainder were candidates for the Conjoint Board Examinations in Medicine and Dentistry and Massage students Students of other Medical Schools and Universities continue in increasing numbers to avail themselves both of the facilities provided for practical work in Anatomy and of the revision courses Examination results maintained their satisfactory standard 130 candidates passing an Intermediate Examination in the course of the Session The system of holding an internal examination in Anatomy for the Second London does not appear to have had the effect
