ANNUAL REPORT xxxi lectures on The Palaeozoic Floras of Europe An important part of the courses was the demonstration of the technique developed in the Department Department of Geography The number of students was as follows First Year 28 including evening class students Second Year 24 of whom were evening class students Third Year one being an evening student Four students presented themselves for the Final Honours Examina tion Two obtained First Class and Second In the Academic Diploma Examination all the candidates qualified The Department has now become more stabilised though the initial stages of development are by no means completed The historical side has again been re-arranged and it is hoped that satisfactory scheme has now been evolved The former course was found to be too discontinuous but the greater continuity established during the Session should greatly benefit students in this very important branch of the work An optional course has also been arranged on the Distribution of Plants and Animals The first part of the Course Distribution of Plants was given during the Session The arrangement for joint scheme of teaching with the School of Economics works satisfactorily Miss Warren who held the Geographical Studentship during the Session did good work on the Fenlands of Norfolk She was awarded Univer- sity Studentship at the end of the Session Department of Botany The total number of students in the Department during the Session was 187 distributed as follows First Medical 71 Intermediate Science Day 25 and Evening Pass and Honours Finals 26 Inter- collegiate 48 Research and Miscellaneous Four lectures were also given to Post-graduate students in The History Methods and Principles of Science One student entered for the Special Honours Examination and obtained Second Class Honours Eight students took Botany in the Sc General Honours Examination The Carter Prize in Botany was awarded to Miss Stanfield During the summer of 1925 winding stair was constructed which furnishes method of access to the greenhouses on the roof This is temporary arrangement until the construction of Greenhouse- Laboratory and other extensions of the Department which are sorely needed can be carried through as part of general scheme for the building of another storey on the roof of the College In the meantime the space available for growing plants under glass and for study and experiment is already much over-crowded During the winter an Osram 750 watt lamp with reflector given by the Osram General Electric Company was installed in the Greenhouse for certain experi- ments on the effect of prolonged light upon growth During the summer of 1925 the Professor made an expedition to the Amazon bsinging back large amount of tropical plant material
