XXX ANNUAL REPORT fitted up and considerable amount of apparatus for research and instruction in experimental Biology has been purchased or constructed new Laboratory Attendant Mr Kempson has been appointed The large collection of sponges made by Professor Dendy has been transferred to the Natural History Museum at South Kensington as it was considered that they would be of more value to Science if housed there Department op Geology There were 131 students in the Department during the Session Of these 78 were in the first year 54 in Engineering and 24 in Science in the Final Science Course there were 20 and in the Second Year Engineering Course 15 and Intercollegiate Honours students numbered 18 Two students presented themsleves for the Special Honours Examination one was placed in the First and the other in the Second Class In the General Honours Examination candidates presented themselves in Geology of whom all but two had been attending lectures in the Department The results in the First Class in the Second and Passes were very satisfactory The apparatus has been overhauled and where necessary repaired and the Department can still claim to be well equipped To some extent the efficiency of the teaching depends on the efforts of members of the Staff in making collections during vacations for it is much more interesting for both teacher and student to use new material and as in past years valuable additions have been made during the Session to the teaching material Each member of the Staff has been pursuing some original work and two Research students have been working in the Department in the evenings For part of the Session two visitors worked in the Department one the Education Officer for Travancore Mr Pride and the other Mr Bull Principal of the Technical School of Photography in Bolt Court Fleet Street Dr Wells continued his work on Jersey and on Merioneth Mr Wooldridge in addition to working with Dr Wells on the Geology of Jersey continued his researches on the London area and the Weald and the Professor continued to investigate the Lower Carboni- forous Flora The Swiney Lectures in Geology were again delivered by the Professor and attracted an average attendance of about 140 digest of the lectures was deposited in the British Museum Dr Wells collaborated with Dr Hatch in bringing out new edition of Dr Hatch's work on Igneous Petrology He also acted as Editor of the Proceedings of the Geologists' Association and sat on the Council of the Association Mr Wooldridge served as member of the Council of the Geologists' Association and of the Essex Field Naturalists' Association He contributed papers to each and also assisted in organising excursions At the end of the Session the Professor was invited both by the University of Chicago and by that of Toronto to give short courses of
