xxviii ANNUAL REPORT It was arranged that the tutorial system should be extended and that each member of the Staff should act as tutor to one or more groups of students Professor Jolliffe acted as Chairman of the Board of Examiners in Mathematics He also acted as Examiner for the Junior Mathematical Scholarship at Oxford Department of Physics The number of students who attended courses in the Department during the Session was 312 Of these 178 were Day students in the Faculty of Science Among these were 35 Special Honours students 71 students for General Honours 62 Intermediate Science students and 10 Honours Chemistry students taking Physics as subsidiary subject Students from the Medical and Engineering Faculties num- bered 51 and 48 respectively There were also 13 Evening students and 22 students from the Preliminary Class In the Special Final Examination in July 1926 12 students obtained Honours in Physics being placed in the First Class and in the Second During the Session 15 students were engaged in research under Professor Richardson's direction of whom 14 were working for higher degrees Two members of the Staff proceeded to higher degrees Mr Fisher Ph and Mr Emeleus Ph Cambridge small room on the terrace was taken over to house the instruments used in investigating the electric field changes produced by lightning Professor Richardson was elected President of the Physical Society February 1926 At the Royal Society's Conversazione on June 16th Professor Richardson demonstrated the excitation of soft X-rays and exhibited apparatus for studying their properties On the same occasion Pro- fessor Appleton in collaboration with the Radio Research Board exhibited apparatus used for investigating the properties of radio- telegraphic atmospherics together with records of typical atmospheric wave-forms Department of Chemistry During the Session 298 students attended courses of instruction in the Department Of these 54 attended the Intermediate Science Course 52 were studying for the General Honours Degree and 29 for Special Honours Eighty-seven Medical students and 42 Engineering students attended courses in the Department Thirty-three students have been engaged in research work Seventeen students took the Special Honours Examination in July 1926 Of these obtained First Class were placed in the Second Class and passed Mr Gait was awarded the degree of Sc and the degree of Ph was conferred on Mr Brooker Mr Cocks and Mr Footner The General Honours Laboratory was extended and re-equipped in
