xxiv ANNUAL REPORT teaching and the Professor gave one hour week for an informal class on general Balkan history All the officers passed the preliminary examination for the Interpretership and two obtained distinction These were afterwards sent by the War Office to Bulgaria and have now passed the Army Interpretership Examination in Bulgarian Czecho-Slovak -Dr Vocadlo during the session arranged classes which were attended by students in language and literature for beginners grammar conversation and study of folksongs in phonetics and grammar with conversations and readings for the Intermediate course and in advanced translation and composition He also took class for the Diploma special reading class and philological class He gave number of public lectures on Czech Culture on The Geography and Ethnography of Czecho-Slovakia on Slovak Vernacular Literature and on The Wends of Lusatia Miss Gardner an external student has for some time been engaged on thesis for the degree of Litt on Charles IV as King of Bohemia During the past year Dr Voiadlo published articles in Nove oechy The Palacky Jubilee Czech Slavonic Studies etc and in Kritika Bacon and the Czechs He is also the Editor of new Standard Library in Czech of translations from the English in con- nection with which he has written an introductory essay on Mr Well's Millenium and Mr Galsworthy and his Saga of the English Upper Middle Class Three contributions of his are included in the Proceedings of the Edinburgh Conference on World Education held in July 1925 Serbo-Croat -Dr Subotic during the past year had pupils and gave instruction for eight hours in the week He gave two public lectures on the Battle of Kossovo in History and Traditional Poetry He has been devoting his main efforts to an essay on Serbian Popular Poetry in English German and French Literature which he hopes to present in the autumn for the degree of Litt at Oxford Department of Philosophy Five Post-graduate students were working for Ph and degrees in Philosophy-2 of these in subjects connected with the Philo- sophy of Religion under Dr Matthews Mr John Stoyanovic obtained the Ph degree in Philosophy for his thesis entitled The Religious Philosophy in Russia in the Nineteenth Century" Kireyedsky Dostoevsky Soloviev In the undergraduate courses some increase may be noted in the numbers taking Logic in the Evening Class and the formation of small class in Intermediate Ethics for the first time since the subject was included for the Intermediate Examination should be mentioned The total number of students attending under- graduate courses was 13 and there were also students for the Journalism Diploma attending course in Ethics The Public Lectures in the Department continued to be well attended In the absence of Professor Wildon Carr they were mainly given in
