ANNUAL REPORT XXlii Gary Coolidge Librarian of Harvard University took part in the Slavonic meetings of the Conference Professor Louis Eisenmann of the Institut d'lStudes Slaves at Paris paid visit of week to the School in May delivering two remarkable lectures and arranging for various plans of collaboration between the Institut and the School In particular the two institutions arranged to exchange all information in regard to doctoral theses which are in progress with the object of filling as many as possible of the principal gaps in Slavonic Studies in Western Europe Non-Russian Department In the Michaelmas Term course of ten public lectures on Serbia and the Jugo-Slav Idea and in the Lent Term course of six public lectures on The Making of Modern Roumania which it is believed are the first course of the kind given in any British University were delivered by the Professor During the year the Professor conducted an honours class on The Eastern Question one of the Special Subjects prescribed by the Board of Studies in History which was attended by students He also conducted Seminar at the Institute of Historical Research on The Eastern Crisis 1875-8 which was attended by Post-graduate students Two Post-graduate students completed their work during the year Miss Robinson proceeded to the degree of by thesis on The Diplomatic Relations of Britain and Serbia under Prince Michael Mr Medlicott also obtained the degree of by thesis on Great Britain's Near Eastern Policy from the Congress of Berlin to the Accession of Ferdinand of Bulgaria and was awarded mark of distinction He published an essay in the Slavonic Review for June 1926 on The Mediterranean Agreements of 1887 based on hitherto unpublished material from the Austrian Archives and from the Archives of the Russian Embassy Both Miss Robinson and Mr Medlicott arranged to start work for the degree of Ph at the beginning of next Session Mr Terry worked regularly during the year on his thesis for the degree of Lit on The Diplomatic Relations of Britain and Austria from 1790 to 1795 and hopes to submit his thesis at an early date He worked in the Record Office and in the Austrian Archives Miss Janet Nicolson who was working mainly with Dr Subotic for the degree of Ph on Mediaeval Bosnia and the Bogomil Heresy has been compelled to abandon her work for the present Mr Fennimore Cooper of Yale and Columbia received private instruction from the Professor in general Balkan history and studied the Albanian language with Mr Jopson He intends to submit thesis for the degree of Ph at Columbia on Modern Albanian History During the winter War Office class in Bulgarian was arranged through the School and was taken by three officers The services of Dr Tchitehovsky of the Bulgarian Legation were secured for the language
