ANNUAL REPORT xxi Department of Italian Fifty-one students attended lectures or classes in the Department during the session Of these 17 were students from the Department of English attending special lectures on Chaucer and Boccaccio 19 were Journalism Students attending special lectures on Italian Critical Theories was Regular Evening Student working for the Intermediate Examination in Arts and the remaining 14 were students taking Italian as subsidiary subject or occasional students The Lecturer delivered three public lectures on Chaucer and Boccaccio Professor Gaetano Salvemini delivered course of six public lectures during the Lent Term 1926 on The Political Evolution of Italy in the Nineteenth Century Department of Portuguese There have been students in the Session of them Post-graduate Miss Ridley passed her final examination for the Degree of and Mr Trevor Hughes was first of the candidates taking Portuguese in the examination for the Diplomatic and Consular Services and obtained an appointment under the Colonial Office The Professor gave public lectures on "The Role of Diplomacy in the Struggle between the Portuguese and Dutch for Brazil 1640- 1661 and on Almeida Garrett as Dramatist and was engaged in research on the subject of chivalry in the Portuguese historians Mr Bentley continued his researches on the manuscript sources of the early Portuguese chronicles He prepared study of MS 248 in the Lisbon National Library considered as source of Fernao Lopes which has been accepted for publication by the Revista de Historia He also printed an index of the references to Portuguese affairs in Rymer and prepared list of the English MSS and MSS relating to Great Britain in the Pombal Collection in the Lisbon National Library The special grant made it possible to acquire for the library standard works long out of print such as Zurara's Chronica de Guine and the Ineditos de Historia Portuguesa ×™ in volumes Department of Modern Greek Pending the appointment of new Professor course of three public lectures was arranged for the Lent Term and delivered by Professor Andreades of the University of Athens on England and Greece in the Nineteenth Century the first dealing mainly with Gladstone the second with Disraeli and the third with Lord Salisbury During the session course was arranged in Modern Greek at the request of the War Office School of Slavonic Studies The number of students of all kinds working at the School during this Session was 60 The number of elementary students cannot be greatly increased until there are closer relations with Russia and business posts are open once more The teaching of the Russian language
