XX ANNUAL REPORT Delegacy course of four public lectures on יי Deutsche Dichtung der Gegenwart The chair at the first meeting was taken by His Excel- lency the German Ambassador and the lectures were well attended and aroused much interest Department of Spanish Studies Numbers of Students Day Evening Total Intermediate 14 10 Intercollegiate 10 24 Pass 18 11 Intercollegiate 19 Honours Intercollegiate History students Intercollegiate Com Intermediate Com Final 11 16 Post-graduate Intercollegiate Others 21 104 Results of Examinations -Two students were candidates for Honours in the Examination and both were placed in the Second Class Five students presented themselves for the Pass Examination and were all successful being placed in Section Β and in Section Researches -Four students were engaged in research work Miss Mary Stephenson who won the Gilchrist Studentship and studied last year in the libraries in Madrid was working on The Origin of the Romantic Movement in Spain Mr James Murray was working on an Essay on the Life of Gaspar Melchor de Jovellanos the writer statesman and reformer who took such prominent part in organising resistance against Napoleon Mr Lloyd was working on The Life and Times of the Chancellor of Castile Pero Lopez de Ayala He has this winter devoted his time to study of the intervention of the Black Prince in Spain according to Spanish sources Miss Walker Royal Holloway College attended Seminar Class on the lineage of the novel in Spain down to Cervantes and worked on Spanish Influences in England General -Increased attention was devoted to Evening Students and considerable additions were made to the Library thanks to the special grant made for the acquisition of works of capital importance complete collection of the two most important periodical publications dealing with Hispanic Studies one French and the other Spanish was purchased after much difficulty The Head of the Department continued to act as Inspector of Spanish classes in the Institutes aided or maintained by the London County Council He delivered lectures in Cambridge and in London The University of London Spanish Club with its headquarters in King's College met regularly every Tuesday During the Lent Term play was acted in Spanish
