ANNUAL REPORT xix Language of Huysmans and Miss Gurney who was working for the degree of in Middle French Literature Mr Hughes conducted research on various aspects of French Litera- ture in the Nineteenth Century The tutorial system in the Department was extended farther this session The French Library proved most useful it was constantly used and it was kept in good order by the students Dr Shears was appointed Professor of French in the University of Aberdeen towards the end of the session he had previously been re-elected Secretary to the Board of Studies in Romance Languages Madame de Walmont continued her series of lectures on French Literature for the British Broadcasting Company Most of the Honours students visited France during the summer vacation as in previous years in order to attend holiday courses at French Universities Two out of the four prizes offered by the London Chamber of Commerce in their recent examinations were won by students of the Department Miss Gurney obtained the Silver Medal offered by the French Government and Mr Lewis Harmer prize The standard of the examination is that of the Honours Examination for Modern French Department of German The total number of students in the Department during the session was 149 distributed as follows Day Evening Total Intermediate 11 11 22 Pass Honours 12 History Classes Science Classes 61 Com 39 Ph 149 In the Final Examination candidate obtained Second Class Second Division and the student taking German for the Journalism Diploma passed in that subject The organisation of the Com classes has worked smoothly under the new Tutor Dr Rose and the arrangements for advising students as to their courses at the beginning of the session and for keeping the College and the School of Economics in touch generally in this joint work have been quite successful The English Goethe Society continued to avail itself of the hospitality of the College and the Council Room was much appreciated as place of meeting In October Herr Rudolf Binding delivered at the invitation of the
