ANNUAL REPORT xv Owing to the strike the Dinner to New Graduates usually given by the Principal and the President of the Old Students' Association on the eve of Presentation Day could not be held this year dinner of the Fellows of King's College at which the newly elected Fellows were the guests was held on June 11th REPORTS OF DEPARTMENTS FACULTY OF ARTS Department of Classics During the session there were 84 students taking Intermediate Latin and taking Intermediate Greek Forty-one students were being instructed in Latin and in Greek for the Final Pass Examina- tion for the degree of Seven students were working for Classical Honours of whom took the Final Examination in July Two of these obtained First Classes as internal students the third who sat for the External Examination was placed in the upper division of the Second Class The work of the Department was placed on tutorial basis more completely than before There was also an extended co-operation with the English Department In addition to the course of lectures on the ancient drama now regularly given to evening students for the Diploma in English the Professor gave some lectures on ancient literary criticism to students in Journalism The Professor delivered in May and June series of four public lectures on The Growth of Irony Mr Bevan gave course of lectures in the University of Oxford in connection with his tenure of the Speaker's Lectureship Professor Conway lectured in June on The Spirensian Tradition in the Manuscripts of Livy Department of English Language and Literature About one hundred students have been attending the Honours Courses and of these about 40 were evening students The number attending the Pass Courses was small about 30 and of these day students took English as subsidiary to Honours and were evening students In the Advanced Section of the Department 22 students were at work for the Ph degree of whom had already obtained their and 13 for the degree of The number of those attending the first second third and fourth year's course for the Diploma in English Language and Literature Evening Faculty was about 150 and in addition some 12 were full-time day students for the one-year course Certain courses were attended also by those who were preparing for the Diploma in Journalism Three students were placed in the First Class in the Final Honours Examination The twelve full-time candidates for the Final
