ANNUAL REPORT xiii applications had to be refused owing to lack of space Arrangements have since been made to increase the accommodation by the acquisition of the upper flat at 54 Queensborough Terrace During the year number of books were purchased from the grant of Ā£100 made by the College Library Committee 13 The University The Trustees of the Duke of Bedford accepted in May the offer of the Treasury for the resale of the Bloomsbury Site offered to the University in 1921 The College is only affected directly in regard to the School of Slavonic Studies which is housed in the Institute of Historical Research in Malet Street on the site which now returns to the possession of the Duke's trustees If the Institute is compelled to remove it will thus become necessary to find other accommodation for the School of Slavonic Studies The Report of the Departmental Committee on the University of London was issued on March 23rd 1926 The central proposal of the Committee was the institution of Council of the University which would be responsible for the distribution of Parliamentary Grants and thus take the place of the present University Grants Committee in regard to the College The Departmental Committee did not favour policy of disincorporation It proposed however the institution of new committee of the Senate to be called the Collegiate Council and to advise the Senate on all matters concerning Colleges and inter- collegiate relations on which the chief Colleges and Schools of the University would be represented 14 College Societies and Activities The Union Society had successful session The sixth Com- memoration Week was held between December 12th and December 22nd-the reason for the longer period being that the term ended so close to Christmas that it was necessary for the Dramatic Society's performance to take place few days before the other events in order that the rest of the programme might be carried through with the minimum of alteration The Dramatic Society produced Sir James Barrie's play Dear Brutus with great success All the three performances were well attended and the standard of acting was very good For Wednesday December 16th the usual fixtures with University College were arranged at Mitcham but unfortunately frost prevented some of the games from being played The Principal the President of the Old Students' Association and the Dean of King's College held their Reception on the evening of December 16th The oration which was preceded as usual by the presentation of the new Fellows was delivered by the Principal owing to the absence through illness of Lord Justice Atkin The dinner in the evening was held at the Connaught Rooms The Commemoration Dance was held on Friday December 18th For the first time it was held in the College and it
