ANNUAL REPORT ix The possibility of alternative papers in the Final Examinations in the Faculties of Natural Science and Engineering was considered by the Professorial Board and recommendations were made to the Senate through the Delegacy The Scholarship in Laws was thrown open to day as well as evening students and its value was fixed at £30 for the former and £20 for the latter Owing to the accumulation of the funds of the Rabbeth Medical Scholarship it was found possible to award second scholarship and two prizes one of £30 and one of £15 can now be annually awarded provided the candidates attain sufficient standard of merit The Delegacy again awarded six bursaries to students from Women's Training Colleges to enable them to take the Day Diploma Course in English in the session 1926-7 lending library for Evening Students is being established with the help of sum of £100 bequeathed by Mr Frederick Godwin for their benefit Mainly in order to enable students in the Departments of Arts to attend scientific lectures and students in other Departments to attend literary lectures the Delegacy agreed that subject to the approval of the Dean of his Faculty and the Lecturer concerned any regular student may attend one class in any other Faculty without extra tuition fee Library The number of readers and the number of books lent out were well maintained The special grant of £2 500 made last year by the University Grants Committee has enabled other important large works and series to be purchased in addition to those mentioned in the previous report Among these may be mentioned complete set of the Corpus Inscrip- tionum Latinarum considerable part of the grant has been devoted to the French Section of the Library several hundreds of volumes have been added important gaps have been filled and the general improve- ment is very marked small departmental Library has been formed in the Education Department which has proved of service to the students concerned At the request and with the assistance of committee of the evening students the Library has been kept open each evening in term until 45 valuable collection of mathematical books which formed the private library of the late Mr James lecturer in the Mathe- matical Department has been bequeathed by him to the College list of books presented to the Library during the year will be found in Appendix IV Finance The grant from the University Grants Committee was increased from £40 000 to £49 000 per amium Of the additional £9 000 £4 500
