iv ANNUAL REPORT St Bartholomew's Hospital Medical School Mr Patchin Lecturer in Dental Metallurgy resigned on his appointment as Principal of the Sir John Cass Technical Institute Mr Firth resigned his appointment as part-time Demonstrator in Physics and Dr Miller resigned his appointment as Research Assistant to Professor Smiles in the Depart- ment of Chemistry New Appointments Professorships and Readerships -Dr Saurat Director of the Institut Fran9ais du Royaume Uni was appointed Pro- fessor of French in succession to Professor Spiers but with the status of full University Professor Dr Saurat was educated at the Uni- versity of Paris and he has been Lecturer in French at the University of Glasgow Lecturer and subsequently Professor of English Language and Literature in the University of Bordeaux and since 1924 Director of the Institut Fran9ais and also member of the University Board of Studies in Romance Languages and Literature Mr Marshall was appointed Koraes Professor of Modern Greek Mr Marshall was University Reader in Classics at Birkbeck College from 1923 up to the time of his present appointment Since 1923 he has been Corre- sponding Member of the Historical and Ethnological Society of Greece and member of the Editorial Committee of the Journal of Hellenic Studies and he has published two books and numerous articles and papers relating to Archaeology and Mediaeval and Modern Greek Literature Dr Box Professor of Hebrew and the Old Testament in the Theological Department since 1918 and Lecturer in Hebrew in the Faculty of Arts was elected to the Davidson Chair of the Old Testament in the University Two part-time Readerships one in Greek and Latin Palaeography and the other in Diplomatic and English Archives were instituted by the Senate in place of the part-time Readership in Mediaeval Palaeography and Dr Claude Jenkins and Mr Hilary Jenkinson were respectively appointed to the new Readerships The Senate raised Dr Subotic from the status of Lecturer to that of Reader in Serbo- Croatian Language and Literature part-time Readership in English Law was instituted in place of the previous Lectureship and Mr Hussey Griffith the former Lecturer was appointed Reader In place of the previous Senior Lectureship in the subject University Readership in Mechanical Engineering was instituted to which Mr Davies was appointed Miss Stone was appointed Reader in Romance Philology in succession to Dr Shears Other Appointments Faculty of Arts -In the Department of History Miss Chew resigned her Assistant Lectureship for part-time appointment in order to undertake literary work and Miss Β O'Donnell was appointed part-time Assistant Lecturer to take the remainder of Miss Chew's work Miss Μ Μ McKechnie was appointed Assistant Lecturer in the Department of French and Gaudin succeeded Francillon as Assistant In the School of Slavonic Studies Prince Mirsky part-time Lecturer in Russian was appointed full-time Assistant Lecturer Mr Herbert Ward late Chief
