226 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING The William Siemens Laboratory The William Siemens ×™ ×™ Laboratory is open throughout the week for advanced Students whose preparation qualifies them for conducting original researches under advice and direction of the Professor The Laboratory is provided with two overhead travelling cranes to carry tons line of shafting capable of transmitting 100 horse power at 250 revolutions per minute and pit 30 feet by feet by feet deep for testing purposes The Laboratory Equipment includes one Siemens 8-pole revolving field type Alternator 1- 2- or 3-phase 100 kilowatt at 750 revolutions per minute specially constructed to give varying volts for laboratory pur- poses Siemens shunt wound Motor 75 with commutator poles Siemens shunt wound open type 4-pole Motor 25 One Siemens compound wound 4-pole Generator 500 to 550 volts 90 amperes 750 revolutions per minute Two Dick Kerr shunt wound open type 4-pole Motors 25 One 20 kilowatt Westinghouse Generator of Direct and 1- 2- and 3-phase Alternating Currents One kilowatt 2- phase Rotary Converter and the necessary controlling and measur- ing apparatus One Hewittic mercury arc 40 ampere rectifier Two Siemens direct-current machines each of 11 kilowatt output at 880 revolutions per minute specially arranged for differential testing Two Alternating Current machines each of 10 kilowatt output similarly arranged for differential testing Siemens EP In duction Motor for 1- or 2-phase working Westinghouse 3- phase Induction Motor Two 3-phase Induction Motors arranged for cascade work and pole changing Heyland single phase Induction Motor 14 kilowatt 100 000 Volt Transformer and others of lower voltage tramcar equipment consisting of Brill undertruck fitted with two 35 Dick Kerr Motors with trolley controllers rheostats &c for series parallel working also special testing bed arranged for testing the motors differentially with and without the gear 10 Westinghouse single phase series Alternating Current Motor 10 Siemens- Schuckert single-phase series motor Oerlikon Three- phase Commutator Motor Rsyrolle Mining Type Oil Circuit Breaker Protective Devices Automatic overhead Time Limit The Laboratory is supplied with set of 100 Tudor cells of 140 Ampere-hour capacity and Lancashire Dynamo Co Automatic Reversible Booster Electric Supply Meters for Alternate and Direct Currents apparatus required for examining the instan- taneous effects of alternating currents by means of revolving contact makers or the Oscillograph The College is equipped with Radio- telegraphic Antenna and complete apparatus for illustrating the subject of Radio-telegraphy including Relaying Devices The instru- ments in use are very complete and modern and Students are enabled to have practical instruction in every branch of Electrical Engineering
