Vlll ANNUAL REPORT years now appears to have ceased to be practical politics The Treasury offered sum of Ā£370 000 for the present site and buildings It has been agreed by the Senate and the Council that this is quite inadequate either as compensation for the existing College or as fund for building new College It is understood that the Treasury is not prepared to make any further offer and the proposal may therefore be regarded as dead Expansion on the present site is the policy which the Senate will in these circumstances be compelled to adopt and the Council will do its best to co-operate in such scheme It may be hoped that the Theological Department will benefit by obtaining some additional rooms one of which might be used as Students' Common Room Conclusion In considering the work of the past Session the Council is encouraged by signs that the Theological Department continues to do valuable work for the Church and nation and to represent an element in the life of the whole College which is widely recognised as giving to it unique character We are glad to note that the relations of the Theological Department with the other Faculties continue to be of the most cordial kind We are also thankful to be able to report that the financial position is much better than in previous times and the Council is burdened by no serious debt It is not possible however to regard the position as entirely satisfactory while the salaries of teachers of theology fall so far short of those of teachers of other subjects There is moreover need for larger funds for the assistance of students through exhibitions and bursaries We hope that as time goes on benefactions will accrue which will make it possible to deal with these defects Looking into the future we may feel some apprehension on the ground of party spirit in the Chr We are convinced however that it will become more and more cleai that it is good for men of various views to study and pray together in College like our own as compre- hensive as the Church of England itself
