iv ANNUAL REPORT Public Lectures Some important public lectures were delivered during the Session Dr Tennant gave course on Miracle its philosophical Pre- suppositions in the Michaelmas Term Canon Streeter lectured on Primitive Church Order and Mr Mozley on The Doctrine of God in the Easter Term All these courses were advanced lectures under the auspices of the Theological Faculty of the University In addition Professor Rogers arranged two courses on Church Music in the Michaelmas and Lent Terms and himself conducted several greatly appreciated hymn and carol practices Two inaugural lectures by scholars who are connected with the Theological Department as well as the Faculty of Arts must also be mentioned Some Results of the Excavations at Ur by Mr Gadd and The Nature and Influence of Babylonian Literature by Mr Smith Professor Box gave public lecture on the Conflict of Hebraism and Hellenism in connexion with course arranged by the Department of Classics and the Dean lectured on the Social and Political Ideas of John Calvin in course given under the auspices of the Department of History University Degrees During the year two students of the Theological Department obtained the degree of Ph and four obtained the degree of The results both in the Final and Intermediate examinations were less satisfactory than in previous years The cause appears to be that we are now dealing with men who have passed the Matriculation but without Greek and in some cases without Latin To such men the amount of linguistic study required for the Intermediate which includes Classical Greek New Testament Greek Latin and Hebrew constitutes heavy burden which only the ablest are capable of bearing We may note here the results of examinations taken by women These are satisfactory Three candidates entered for the Lambeth Diploma two obtaining First Class Honours and one Second Class One candidate passed the first half of the examination for the University Diploma and twelve out of fourteen entries passed the examination for the University Certificate in Religious Knowledge The Associateship During the year the Council have elected 46 Associates the total being made up as follows from the Faculties -Theology 19 Arts Science 10 Engineering The annual Reunion was held on Whit Tuesday in the College The reversion to this time-honoured date seems to have been welcomed by the members of the Theological Society for the number attending was greater than in any year since the war though still below the standard of former times
