ANNUAL REPORT XXX111 Faculty of Engineering The number of students 130 as compared with 135 in the previous session again showed slight fall An increasing number of students now enter the second year immediately having passed the Intermediate Examination from school or from works There were during the session 52 First Year 28 Second Year 35 Third Year Post-graduate and 13 Special students Thirty-one Internal students entered for the Final Sc Eng Examination in July Of these 12 obtained First Class Honours Second Class Honours and 11 passed One student sat for the External Sc Eng Examination and passed Three part-time students also sat for this examination of whom one obtained First Class and two Second Class Honours Sixteen students were awarded the College Diploma in Engineering with Advanced Mathematics and 11 obtained the Certificate in Engineering Department of Civil Engineering -Dr Lobban obtained the degree of Sc Eng of the University of Glasgow by thesis on "Grillage and Beinforced-Conorete Foundations '1 the experimental work for which he had conducted in the Laboratory during the last two sessions The Professor commenced research on The effect of Contractions in Open Channels in connection with professional advice given to Mr Percy Griffith Inst former student of the Department Mr White Assistant Lecturer in collaboration with Mr Campbell Lecturer in the Mechanical Department conducted research on The effect of Friction on Ball-Hardness Tests Dr Lobban continued to collaborate with Mr Geneve Senior Lecturer in the Mechanical Department in the design and construction of the Liverpool Victoria Friendly Society's Building Southampton Row and in the design of the floors etc for the new Nottingham University College Buildings The Professor continued to serve on the British Engineering Standards Association's Committee on Cast Iron Pipes for Water and Gas Under the Inter-collegiate scheme for the teaching of Geography arranged with the London School of Economics the Staff of the Depart- ment continued to give instruction in the subject of The Use of Instruments and Methods of Map Making for the degree Pass and Honours the Sc Pass degree and the Academic Diploma in Geography for both day and evening students course of three special evening lectures was given in the Lent Term by Mr Radcliffe Barnett Inst on Aqueduct and Filter Construction Department of Mechanical Engineering -The following researches conducted by the Professor are at present in progress or in preparation in the Department the collapse of tubes by external pressure investigation of the stress-system at failure in ductile materials with special reference to the strain-energy theory the effect of pre-heating the air supply to an engine using alcohol fuel
