ANNUAL REPORT χίχ Dr Hubert Hall continued to direct the Publications of the Royal Historical Society and at the American Historical Conference at Rich- mond Virginia acted as representative of the University In addition to three courses of public lectures given in the Depart- ment of which particulars will be found in the section of this Report concerned with Public Lectures the following special lectures were given By Professor Newton on The Government of the British Empire at the L'niversity of California and on Historical Discoveries of the Fifteenth and Sixteenth Centuries for London teachers by Dr Edwyn Bevan who also delivered the Speaker's Lectures at Oxford on Greek Religious Ideas and by Mr Hilary Jenkinson on The Use of Archives at University College Mr Jenkinson also delivered the Maitland Memorial Lectures at Cambridge and Dr Hubert Hall delivered course to Post-graduate students on The Practical Study of Media val Historical Sources Department of French -The numbers in the various classes were well maintained both in the day and the evening classes There were over 40 students in the Honours Classes and over 80 in the classes for Inter- mediate Arts The number of students from the School of Economics attending classes with view to the degree of Com also increased and an additional class was formed for their instruction In the final examination two students of the College obtained First Class Honours seven were placed in the Second Class and three in the Third There were no failures In the London Chamber of Commerce Examinations several of the students obtained the Senior Certificate in French with distinction in the written or oral parts of the examination or both and three obtained Prizes As in past years number of the students spent the summer vacation in France to attend holiday courses of study Professor Spiers gave course of lectures at the University of Geneva as part of the Holiday Courses in August on Methodology The Department will profit greatly by the institution of the special French Library for the use of its students Department of German -The total number of students in the Depart- ment including those attending classes for Science students and for the degree of Com was 148-an increase of 35 on the total number in the previous session Of these were engaged in study with view to Higher degrees 11 in the day and in the evening were taking the Honours Course for the degree of 12 in the day and in the evening were offering German as subject for the Pass degree of and 22 12 in the day and 10 in the evening were offering it as subject for the Intermediate Course In the Final Examination one candidate obtained First Class in Honours two obtained Second Class and one Third Five candi-
