xvi ANNUAL REPORT REPORTS OP DEPARTMENTS Faculty of Arts Department of Classics -The students working in the Department during the session were distributed as follows -Latin 121 of whom 86 were taking the language for the Intermediate Examination and for the Honours Examination while 11 were offering it as subject for the Pass Degree of and 22 as Subsidiary subject Greek 12 of whom were taking the language for the Intermediate Examination and for the Honours Examination while was offering it as subject for the Pass Degree of and as Subsidiary subject Honours Classics including both Latin and Greek and Post-graduate students In the Final Examination at the close of the session one candidate obtained Second Class Honours in Latin and one candidate Third Class Honours in Greek Of the two candidates for Honours in Classics one obtained Second Class and the other Third Two students in the Department Mr Glover and Mr Heather were awarded University Exhibitions Miss Helen Macdonald student in the Department proceeded to the degree of by thesis on Manuscript of Cicero in the British Museum Professor Conway of the University of Manchester lectured in the Department during the last term of the session on The Text of Livy In the same term course of public lectures on Classical subjects was delivered by the Professor Dr Bevan Professor Box and Professor Grace Macurdy of Vassar College The Professor and Mr Laistner also gave public lectures in the courses arranged by the Department of History of which particulars will be found in the section of this Report which is concerned with the public lectures of the College Department of English -The Department judged by College and University results did excellent work both in the day and evening classes There were 55 Honours students attending in the day and 20 evening students in the same category Of these 27 sat for the recent University examination for English Honours being placed in the First Class Mr Crotch was at the head of the list and gained the George Smith Studentship Two other students of the College were considered for the Studentship as approximately the best candidates of the year The Intermediate Classes numbered 120 students day and evening The roll of Post-graduate students engaged in research work in various branches of English study for the degrees of and Ph continued to be large Mr Popovitch of Belgrade obtained the degree of Ph for thesis on Shakespeare in Serbia The follow- ing gained the degree -Miss Rosenfeld with the mark of distinction her subject being Prologues and Epilogues 1660-1700 Mr Straw for study of The First Prayer Book of Edward VI "- linguistic investigation Mr Byles with the mark of distinction for
