ANNUAL REPORT ΧΠ1 11 Buildings During the year two of the vaults vacated by the Plumbers' Com pany together with one released by the Civil Engineering Department were adapted for research in Physics another vault was fitted up for the teaching of Metallurgy to Dental students and further improve- ments were made in the Refectory During the Long Vacation con- siderable alterations and additions to the College buildings were carried into effect An additional storey was erected on the north-west side of the buildings providing Senior Students' Laboratory and Private Research Laboratory for the Department of Zoology and three Research Rooms and Private Room for the Department of Physiology At the southern end of the building three Research Rooms for the Depart- ment of Geology were built over length of 60 feet of the roof of the central corridor Mr Lobban prepared the plans and was appointed to supervise the work In addition the rooms vacated by the Depart- ment of Bacteriology and Public Health were adapted for the teaching of Bio-Chemistry These various alterations resulted in increasing the areas available for Physiology Zoology and Geology by about 100 per cent 40 per cent and 20 per cent respectively Considerable alterations were made in the Senior Students' Chemical Laboratory and resulted in providing accommodation for 45 students as compared with 27 hitherto The total expenditure on the new buildings and alterations amounted to over £8 000 The School of Slavonic Studies removed during the session to its new quarters in the Institute of Historical Research 12 Hostels The Plaianes -The new buildings were completed by the end of the Long Vacation and at the beginning of the session there were 52 students in residence library was begun by the gift of some 60 books once belonging to the late Sir Rollit which had been presented to the College by Sir Albert's sister The Principal resigned his Chairmanship of the Men's Hostel Com- mittee and Professor White was appointed in his stead Mr Campbell resigned the office of Warden and the Delegacy expressed to him their appreciation of the services he had rendered in conducting the affairs of the Hostel Dr Lawrence Lecturer in Biochemistry at King's College Hospital and resident at the Platanes was appointed to succeed Mr Campbell Miss Tibbets was succeeded by Miss Susan Gent as Matron of the Hostel report was received from the Fire Inspector expressing his approval of the arrangements at the Hostel for safety in case of fire King's College Hostel for Women -There were 49 students in residence at the beginning of the session but this number was reduced at the end of the session in order to improve the quality of the accom-
