116 FACULTY OF AETS Candidates who have taken the Pass Examination may present themselves for Honours in any one branch after having completed such course of study as the Senate may in each case approve Honours graduates may take second branch after further approved course of study extending over at least one year II -FOR THE DEGREES OF Ph AND Lit Arrangements are made for supervising the studies of graduates of this and other Universities who are admitted as candidates for the higher degrees in Arts of the University of London III -DEPARTMENT OF EDUCATION Professional Training The students of the Department who are in training for the Teaching profession fall into two categories Private Students men and women those who enter the department as fee-paying students for the purpose of professional training only with view to service in secondary schools Open to all graduates men and women of recognised universities who are accepted for training by the Professor of Education the training course is purely professional and prepares for the Teacher's Diploma Examination of the University of London in July It extends over one session three terms and includes supervised school practice in secondary schools for two days per week during term together with three weeks' practice during September in elementary schools which enables students to qualify for the Board of Education Teacher's Certificate The fee is £28 for the Session and can be paid in equal terminal instalments on payment of an additional guinea in the first term Application may be made at any time before 1st July but only in exceptional circumstances will the Department accept candidates who apply after that date The Session 1926-27 begins on September 11th King's Scholars men only are those who receive grant from the Board of Education covering the cost of their academic studies and post-graduate professional training and who are prepared for service in schools approved by the Board Such students must have passed the Matriculation or Higher Schools Examination before admission and be seventeen years of age on the 1st of August preceding admission to the full four years' course They spend three years on their academic course and one year on their professional training The Board of Education allows students recom- mended by the College who have successfully completed an honours course to train for service in Secondary Schools and to take the course which prepares for the Teacher's Diploma of the University King's Scholars pay no tuition fees and receive an annual main- tenance grant of £20 and such further sum as the Board may pay for that purpose
