xxvi ANNUAL REPORT During the year all the spare time of the assistants was taken up in the arrangement of the Herbarium which is housed in cupboards in the advanced laboratory The number of sheets is estimated at 5000 and includes many valuable specimens of British and tropical flowering plants and ferns Many of the specimens were collected as early as 1840 and some bear the names of notable botanists such as Sir Joseph Hooker These collections appear to have been entirely neglected for at least fifty years many of the spcci- mens never having been mounted at all They have been re-grouped in families in connection with the process of removing decades of dust and are now being properly mounted on herbarium paper as time permits Over 1000 are now available freshly mounted and arranged in genus covers for teaching purposes In this connection attention should also be directed to Dr Bottler's East Indian Herbarium which is housed in herbarium cases in the hallway and which is estimated to contain 13 000 sheets These have never even been mounted although they include many valuable speci- mens some of them with original'descriptions and some dating at least as far back as 1804 It is eminently desirable that such collection of tropical plants should be brought into botanical use and this can only be done by employing additional assistance for the purpose of mounting the specimens At the present rate at which the other herbarium is being renovated this would require about fifteen years small fund set aside for this purpose would enable the work to be accomplished in reasonable time Mrs Ferguson who has acted as research assistant to Professor Gates with grant from the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research was preparing during the Session her Sc thesis on the cytology of certain Liliacese Miss Latter who also held grant for research did excellent work in the investigation of meiosis in Lathyrus and acted as part-time Demonstrator to medical students The Carter Prize in Botany was awarded to Mr Cook During November and December 1923 Mr Conway Zirkle of Johns Hopkins University carried on research in the laboratory on the structure of chloroplasts Mr Allen who completed his Honours Finals Examinations last year was appointed to Scholarship in the Univer- sity of Paris Experiments in Genetics are being continued in the Royal Botanic Gardens Regent's Part with the aid of grant from the Royal Society Faculty of Medical Science Department of Anatomy -The past session was one of increatsed activity in the Department and the number of students continued to be very large In specialised branches of study new records were established of the number of students attending classes more particu- larly for the Primary Fellowship Examination of the Royal College of Surgeons and for the Certificate of the Chartered Institute of Massage and Medical Gymnastics The number of students availing themselves
