ANNUAL REPORT XXV Palaeontology bearing on Evolution '' Professor Dendy gave course of nine Public Lectures on The Biological Foundations of Society The Department had an exhibit at the Scientific Novelties Exhibition at King's College in the Christmas vacation Department of Geology -The academic courses in the Department included Intermediate Pass and Honours classes in Science Inter- mediate and Honours in Arts Geography and Intermediate and second year courses in Engineering In Inter-collegiate work class was held in Fossil Botany for Honours students In Geography closer co-operation with the London School of Economics was estab- lished but there is likely to be further adjustment since the recognition of Geography in the Faculty of Natural Science as subject for Pass and Honours will affect the whole Science syllabus The classes in Intermediate Geography and in the Physical Basis of Geography for Honours students have again been conducted in the Department In the examinations held at the end of last term the students on the whole acquitted themselves well Two candidates presented themselves for the Honours degree in Science and one obtained First and the other Second Class In the Pass Examinations one student passed in the First Class and the others passed In the Intermediate Examination there were few failures but the results as whole were good By arrangement with the University the Department lends its apparatus on hire for the Honours Examinations This is recognition of the fact that the Department is thoroughly well equipped Mr Wooldridge proceeded to the degree of Sc Department of Botany -The total number of students in the Depart- ment during the session was 195 as compared with 155 in 1922-23 The increase in numbers was largely due to the three Inter-collegiate courses all of which were largely attended by students of other colleges The number of students working for the various examinations were as follows First Medical 40 Conjoint two months' Course 14 Intermediate Science day 26 Intermediate Science evening 13 Pass and Honours Finals 19 Intercollegiate 71 Matriculation Research ΚΓ transfer of Conjoint students to the Department of Physiology was made in consequence of the alteration in the regulations Additions to the equipment made during the year include horizontal microscope for accurate physiological readings freezing microtome and carbon dioxide cylinder and Soxhlet extraction apparatus Numerous specimen jars and glass-topped boxes for the museum were obtained Some 20 lecture diagrams and 150 lantern slides were added to the equipment
