ANNUAL REPORT xxiii and most of the Easter Term Professor Jeffrey and Professor Dale had very heavy burden to bear and the College is very greatly indebted to them for their loyal and ungrudging service in time of difficulty The Secretary of the College Mr Shovelton former Mathematical Lecturer generously helped during the session in the work of the Department and Professor Jolliffe of Royal Holloway College in spirit of friendship which the staff of the Department and the Principal gratefully recognise gave voluntary and very welcome aid The members of the Engineering Department busy as they were with their own work none the less gave assistance in the work of the Mathematical Department The whole story of the work of the Depart- ment during the year is testimony to the spirit which animates the College and proof of Inter-collegiate comity In spite of all the difficulties of the Department and heavily handi- capped as they were the students acquitted themselves creditably in the examination One was placed in the First Class and three othera obtained Honours The staff of the Department next session will be almost entirely new Professor Jolliffe succeeds Professor Jeffery and new Lecturers take the place of Dr Tinto Mr Edwards and Miss Sheriff Department of Physics -The resignation of Professor Richardson from the Wheatstone Chair on his appointment as Yarrow Research Professor of the Royal Society his appointment as he will still be conducting his researches in the College as Director of Research in the College to those students who are working in his own field of investi- gation and the appointment of Professor Appleton to the Wheatstone Chair have all been mentioned in previous part of this Report At the final examination for the degree of Sc held in July one student of the Department was placed in the First class and two in the Third Mr Η Flint Mr Moore and Mr Mosharaffa were awarded the degree of Sc and Mr Congden and Mr Brotherton the degree of Ph Department of Chemistry -The number of students engaged in research during the session was 29 this being about the same number 28 as in 1922-23 On the other hand rather fewer first-year Honours students were admitted-21 as compared with 27 in the previous session The degree of Sc was conferred on Dr Krishna Mr Campbell Mr Gibson Mr Hart and Mr Reid were awarded the degree of Ph while Mr Bere Mr Fagelstone and Mr Gauntlett obtained the degree of Sc Twenty-eight candidates presented themselves for the Honours Sc examination last November of these were placed in the First Class 15 in the Second and in the Third In June 1924 24 candidates sat for the examination of these 12 obtained First Class honours were placed in the Second Class and in the Third Class
