ANNUAL KEPORT xi volumes of their Proceedings presented by the British Academy in order to complete the Library set several volumes of Hibbert Lectures presented by the Hibbert Trustees and volumes on various subjects presented by the Principal the Dean the Secretary Prof Sir Israel Gollancz Prof Halliburton Prof White Prof Hearnshaw Prof Barclay Smith Prof Wildon Carr Prof Smiles Prof Jeffery Prof Prestage Dr Bevan Dr de Souza Bishop Gore Dr Rose Mrs Hales Dr Winkler Sir Cockburn Mr Mavrogordato and the Librarian of the Royal College of Surgeons of England Finance The grant from the University Grants Committee remained at £40 000 of which £2 000 was earmarked for the School of Slavonic Studies The income from Fees amounted to £43 493 decrease of £62 on the previous year but as the result of many economies effected there was credit balance of £732 as compared with loss of £615 in the previous year The sum of £818 as compared with nearly £4 000 in the previous Session was spent on the Provision and Alterations of Buildings and the reduction thus effected enabled the Delegacy to make grants of £500 to the Special Apparatus Reserve Fund and £1 000 to the Men's Hostel Building Fund and also to increase the allocation to the Servants' Superannuation Fund from £750 to £1 000 During the Session the Delegacy undertook the building of the southern wing of the Men's Hostel at The Platanes on Champion Hill towards the cost of which the University Grants Committee made further grant of £5 000 in July 1923 By the end of the Session the sum of £19 150 had been spent on the building of the two new wings and on alterations to the old house leaving deficit at the closing of the Accounts of £2 530 The building was practically completed on November 1924 and it is expected that an additional £6 000 will cover the whole cost of building and equipment On the expenditure side the cost of the salaries of the Staff remained practically stationary and the Delegacy were again able to renew the bonuses granted in the previous year During the Session the Delegacy made proposals to the Senate for consolidating these bonuses in salaries and for placing other salaries on more satisfactory basis and it is hoped that these proposals will become effective during the coming Session Some further improvements were made in the Refectory which fully maintained its popularity with the students The total income for the year amounted to £99 447 16 10d and the expenditure to £98 715 Sd leaving credit balance of £732 12 2d which increases the accumulated balance to £2 043 13 Id 10 Benefactions The Delegacy have to record with gratitude the following bene- factions which have been received by the College during the session The Clothworkers' Company £250 towards the purchase of Vertical Testing Machine for the Engineering Department
