228 FACULTY OF ENGINEERING GEOLOGY Intermediate Sc and Diploma Course Yj -Physical Geology One lecture per week The Earth as Planet-Its larger surface features-Atmospheric agents and their effects-Action of surface and underground waters and of ice-The Ocean its movements and work-Distribution of temperature and pressure in the Earth and its density-The internal forces and their effects Subsidence and Elevation Volcanoes and Earthquakes-The nature modes of formation and occurrence of Aqueous Igneous and Metamorphic Rocks-Structural Geology The characters and relations of rock-masscs-Features produced by Denudation Yt Stratigraphical and Economic Geology One lecture per week Stratigraphy of the British Isles with special reference to the economic aspects of the subject-Elementary Economic Geology Y3 -Laboratory Work Three hours per week Physical Geology -Interpretation of simple geological maps by description and by the drawing of sections Mineralogy and Petrology -Description and identification of common rock-forming minerals and of the principal varieties of rocks-Study of the chief types of rocks in thin sections under the microscope Palceontology -Identification of common fossils and recognition of their stratigraphical horizon Fee for the Course -£6 65 per Term or £15 15 per annum Civil Engineers taking Geology for the Diploma must take -Economic Geology -Summer Term Two lectures per week Laboratory Work Summer Term One half-day per week The subjects treated in this Course include the Geology of Water- supply Building-materials and Road-metal The Laboratory Class in this Course is open only to those Students who have regularly attended Laboratory Classes in Geology during their First Year Fee for the Course £6 Field Class -A Class for field-work in Geology is formed in the Easter Term April-June and excursions are made on Saturday afternoons to localities of geological interest in the London district This Class is open to Regular Students without extra payment Other Students may join the Field-Class on payment of Fee of 10 6d The Tennant Prizes one in Geology and one in Mineralogy of the value of about £7 10s each are awarded for proficiency at the annual examination upon the year's work
