REPORT xlv is lower than that for the corresponding term of 1898 but the amount received in fees is higher satisfactory symptom of the increasing number of Students who are pursuing more than one course of lectures The number of Students attend- ing in the whole of 1898 was 065 slight increase on the numbers for 1897 Among the successes gained by Students during the year may be mentioned Oxford Higher Local Examination for Women First Honours in English Lan- guage and Literature Oxford Honours in Physiology Science and Art Department Quain Essay Prize at University College Crawshay Essay Prize Second Cloth- workers' Art Prize The Worshipful Company of Merchant Taylors have given an Entrance Scholarship of Ā£40 year for three years for this Department The first award was made this spring As the Department provides all instruction necessary for the University examinations open to women in Arts and Science in London and at Oxford it is to be hoped that the generous example set by the Merchant Taylors Company will be followed by other benefactors The drainage at Kensington Square has been entirely relaid at cost of nearly seventy pounds This cause together with the balance of the expense of the new Landscape Studio referred to in last year's Report has for the time seriously burdened the finances of the Department which are kept distinct from those of the College at large The Library for Women Students owing to the kindness of friends of the Col- lege now numbers upwards of 000 volumes The students have formed society for work in the East End which sends certain number of its members every week to help at settlement in connection with the Trinity College Mission at Stratford-le Bow In the Civil Service Department there has been substantial progress The numbers show an increase of 106 The results as regards successes gained in the examinations for Civil Service appointments have been as satisfactory as ever Recentchangesmade by the Civil Service Commissioners in the examination syllabus for Second-Division Clerkships will introduce new developments into these competitions which the Council are carefully watching The Certificates and Prizes to successful Students were
