468 EXHIBITIONS AND SCHOLARSHIPS not be admitted to competition for Scholarship in language which is his own mother tongue nor for Scholarship in language allied to his mother tongue The value of each Scholarship will be Ā£50 per annum The examinations are held in July of each year for three Scholarships The Scholarships are tenable for two years provided that the conduct of the Scholar is considered to be satisfactory by the Trustees and power is given to the Trustees to extend the tenure to three years in special cases Candidates must either have been Students of the School of Oriental Studies of the Imperial Institute or must become Students therein if elected for so long period as the Scholarship is tenable and in no case for less than one year The age of Candidates is to be that of Candidates admitted for competition for the Indian Civil Service viz above 17 years and under 23 years of age on the lst of July of the year of examination Candidates must give notice of intention to compete on or before July the lst in each year after the first year and age will be reckoned up to that date The first Scholarship is to be given for Arabic the second for Persian and the third for Chinese due announce- ment will be made of the subjects selected for subsequent years 10 Successful Competitors must previous to receiving any payments from time to time on account of the Scholar- ships produce evidence that they are pursuing their studies satisfactorily to the Committee of the School 11 The Committee of the School may abstain from awarding any Scholarship if in the judgment of the Examiners sufficient merit be not shown All enquiries should be marked and addressed to the Secretary of the Imperial Institute London
