xlii REPORT degree of Doctor of Laws honoris causa from his University of Glasgow In Botany Mr Schwartz has been appointed Demonstrator In Geology arrangements have been made for practical classes in the Museum which has been partly adapted as Geological laboratory while owing to the generosity of Professor Seeley and Miss Annie Mallet and the co- operation of the British Museum the collections are being enlarged and arrangements are in progress for rendering these more accessible to the Students The department greatly needs more geological and contoured maps as well as lantern with microscope and polariscope attached for ill us- trating the lectures both in geology and in mineralogy It should be added that the number of students in attendance from the Engineering division is so great as to render the newly acquired accommodation already inadequate The department of Bacteriology which has been trans- ferred to this division continues under Prof Crookshank to do admirable work Dr Wilkinson has been added to the staff as Assistant Demonstrator In the division of Applied Science Engineering Architec- ture &c the number of Matriculated Students is slightly lower than last year but the entry of new students last October was exceptionally large so that the prospects for the current year are very good The discipline and work of the Engineering Students is highly commended by the Dean of this division and Professors Adams and Thomson speak favourably of their physical and chemical work respectively The Dean urges the need of increased equipment for the study of Civil Engineering especially in the Drawing Office In the laboratory of Mechanical Engineering great improvements have been made including complete installation of electric light generated by power from the existing Otto gas-engine An Atkinson cycle gas-engine has been presented by Pro- fessor Hopkinson new experimental steam-engine of 50 specially designed for experiments in aid of which the Institution of Mechanical Engineers have made grant of £150 the Clothworkers' Company adding donation of £100 is well in hand at the works of Messrs Marshall of Gainsborough The above improvements will all be
