aster and the Professors in the Faculty of Arts are to be congratulated upon this satisfactory result The Council receive with regret the resignation by Pro- lessor Cunningham of the Tooke Professorship of Political Economy They have elected to the vacant Chair Mr Hewins of Pembroke College Oxford Director of the London School of Economics The Council notice with much pleasure that the University of Oxford have conferred upon Professor Buchheim the degree of honoris causa In the Faculty of Science the number of Matriculated Stu- dents in the Natural Science Division though not large is fairly maintained The strength of this division is in the non-matriculated '×™ students they are specially numerous in the Chemical and Physiological Departments The successes at the examinations of the University of London have been above the average Five gained the degree of Sc At the Preliminary Scientific Examination out of fifteen candidates thirteen were wholly or partially successful In Physics an additional course of lectures for advanced students including candidates for the Sc Examination of London has been held During the past five years the average number of students in the Physical Laboratories has been sixty-four In six years twenty-lour students from this department have proceeded to the degree of Sc London three in honours in Physics one in the First Class and one obtained first class honours in Physics and the Arnott Gold Medal at the Intermediate Science Examination Five candidates for the Civil Service of India have been prepared in this laboratory for their examination in Practical Physics 0116 Student has obtained the degree of Sc at Dublin and another has gained Science Scholarship at Queens' College Cambridge The Chemical laboratories have been greatly extended and the rooms including the new large room lor advanced work are quite full of students Mr Sodeau has resigned the post of Assistant Demonstrator This leaves Mr Kirkaldy single-handed in that capacity The Council record with much satisfaction that Professor Thomson has been elected Fellow of the Uuyal Society and has received the
