358 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES Friday The instruction given on this evening constitutes complete course of preparation for the Boy Copyists' Exam- ination Unless their time for preparation is very limited candidates are however recommended to attend on Mondays as well as on Fridays The Class is divided on Fridays into two Sections for Arithmetic both meeting from 45 to Upon joining Students are examined and placed in the Section suitable for them Second Section Students are removed to the First Section immediately they are found qualified The Monday Class meets from 45 to 45 It is however advisable for all Students to attend at 50 as short Special Classes free to all meet at this time on each evening Fees -One evening per week One period of about ten weeks £1 2s two £2 Two evenings per week One period £1 16s two £3 6s Subjects of Examination Handwriting highest marks attainable 400 Orthography 400 Arithmetic 350 Tots 50 English Composition 200 Geography 200 Copying Manuscript 200 As preference in assigning may some- times be given for proficiency in Shorthand or Typewriting those who wish to do so may show their proficiency therein at further examination Books See General Arrangements Limits of age 15 and 18 rate of pay 14s per week rising Is per week per year or 4d per hour the first year 5c the second and third and 6d the fourth and fifth or at piece rates Boy Copyists are nPt retained as such after the age of 20 but are eligible for the Competitions for Second Division Clerkships and the Excise if within the limits of age and leave without loss of pay may be given to enter the former Those who are or have been Boy Copyists and are between 19 and 21 are eligible for nomination to compete for Assistant Clerkships-Appointments on the Establishment with salaries rising from £55 to £150 Those who h&ve served period of two years or more can obtain an extension of
