FACULTY OF SCIENCE 187 GEOLOGY AND GEOGRAPHY WJTH MINERALOGY II Sbelby Professor Economic Geology Mon 12-I Geology Lectures Tues 2-3 Field Work Alternate Saturday afternoons in Easter Term Mineralogy Lectures Tues 3-4 Mineralogy and Geology Laboratory Tve8 12-1 The work comprises Lectures and Practical Teaching in parts of the subject which are of practical importance in Engineering and concerning the Economic importance of different kinds of stones In Physical Geography exposition is given of the modes of action of mechanical and chemical forces in determining the present contours of the land masses of the earth Practical Field Work on alternate Saturdays in the May Term is directed to examination of the stability and durability of rocks under different denuding agents and as consequences of the influence of stratification upon their chemical constitution In Physical Geology the lectures will explain the nature and properties of the several kinds of rocks and building stones and their occurrence in relation to stratification folding dis- location ntrusion as well as variations of texture which have been developed since their original formation In the Field Work in the Easter Term few of these conditions are examined practically In the Laboratory students work through Series of rock specimens minerals fossils and draw sections from Geological Maps In Mineralogy lectures are given upon the natural history of the minerals which form building materials crystalline and other rocks and which yield the principal metals in mineral veins The extensive collections in the Geological Laboratoiy of the College are used in the laboratory teaching
