334 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES The General Classes meet from 45 to but it is generally advisable to attend at 10 as there are short Special Classes at this hour free to all Students Fees -One evening per week Wednesday One period of about 10 weeks £1 7s two periods £2 8s Two evenings per week Monday and Wednesday One- period of about 10 weeks £2 5s two periods £4 The Class is divided for Arithmetic and for Mensuration into First and Second Sections Upon joining Students are placed in the Section which will give them the help they need If placed in the Second they will be moved to the First immediately they are found qualified Those who join for one evening week will attend on Wednesdays The instruction given on this evening con- stitutes complete course of preparation Unless their time for preparation is very limited Candidates are however re commended to attend on Mondays as well as Wednesdays at least until they have reached an advanced stage of prepa- ration Subjects of Examination for Excise -Handwriting highest marks attainable 400 Arithmetic to Vulgar and Decimal Fractions including Tots 400 English Com- position and Orthography 600 Higher Arithmetic and Mensuration 400 Geography 400 Subjects of Examination for Customs -Handwriting 400 Arithmetic and Mensuration 600 Composition and Ortho- graphy 600 Geography 400 Boohs -See General Arrangements Excise -The limits of age for the Excise Examination are 19 and 22 years Assistants when first appointed must b& unmarried but they can marry after six months' service The organisation is as follows Assistants and Second Class Officers -Commencing salary £50 with officiating allowances amounting to about £30 rising by annual incre- ments of £5 to £85 At that point the officiating allow ances cease and the Assistant becomes Second Class Officer with salary of £115 rising by annual increments
