CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES 333 times be given for proficiency in Shorthand or Typewriting those who wish to do so may show their proficiency therein at further examination Boohs See General Arrangements Limits of age 15 and 18 rate of pay 14s per week rising Is per week per year or 4d per hour the first year 56 the second and third and Qd the fourth and fifth or at piece rates Boy Copyists are not retained as such after the age of 20 but are eligible for the Competitions for Second Division Clerkships and the Excise if within the limits of age and leave without loss of pay may be given to enter the former Those who are or have been Boy Copyists and are between 19 and 21 are eligible for nomination to compete for Assistant Clerkships -Appointments on the Establishment with salaries rising from £55 to £150 Those who have served period of two years or more can obtain an extension of the maximum limit of age for Second Division Clerkships equal to such period and this privilege is not lost if they should be discharged at 20 Office hours 39 per week Holidays with pay fortnight per year in addition to the Bank Holidays &c As the competition for Second Division Clerkships is so severe no unnecessary interval should elapse after ceasing to prepare for Boy Copyistship and before joining the Second Division Clerks' Class Students can if necessary be trans- ferred to the Second Division Clerks' Class before the expira- tion of their fee and proportionate period of attendance will be allowed -EXCISE AND CUSTOMS See above for arrangements that are common to all Classes in Division Excise Competitions are held twice year about May and November Customs Competitions are at present suspended The Course of preparation for each Examination is divided into two periods of about 10 weeks each
