CI 7IL SERVICE CLASSES 331 Fees -One evening per week One period of about 10 weeks £1 7s two periods £2 Ss Two evenings per week One period of about 10 weeks £2 5s two periods £4 The instruction is graded For this purpose the Class is divided into four Sections Upon joining Students are examined and placed in the Section which will give them the help they need They are moved to higher Section imme- diately they are found qualified Students who have reached very advanced state of preparation before joining may if in the Lecturer's opinion qualified be placed at once in the Upper First Section Second Division Clerkships being so much sought after and the competition for them being consequently so severe it is of the greatest importance that candidates should begin their preparation early-that is at 16 or earlier if not pre- paring for Boy Copyistship It is equally important that their attendance should be continuous Subjects of Examination for Second Division Clerkships and Customs Outport Clerkships are the same Handwriting Orthography Arithmetic including Tots Copying MS to test accuracy Indexing or Docketing Digesting Returns into Summaries English Composition Geography English History Book-keeping Boohs -See General Arrangements Second Division Clerhs -Candidates must be between 17 and 20 About nine-tenths of the Appointments are in London Second Division Clerks rise by annual increments of £5 from £70 to £100 by £7 105 to £190 by £10 to £350 and may reach certain Staff Appointments with higher salaries reserved for Second Division Clerks They may after eight years' service be promoted exceptionally to the First Division They are at any time eligible for the Open Competitions for the First Division and all other Appoint- ments if between the prescribed limits of age and the upper limit is extended in favour of persons already in the service
