322 CIVIL SERVICE CLASSES and leave without loss of pay may be given to enter the former competition They also enjoy the following privi- leges -Any one who has served in this capacity for period of two years and upwards can obtain an extension of the maxi- mum limit of age for examinations equal to such period of service and those who hold or have held Boy Appointments for two years and are between 19 and 21 are eligible for nomination to compete for Assistant Clerkships Appoint- ments on the Establishment with salaries rising from £55 to £150 It must be remembered that very many Boy Copyists are discharged at 20 without having gained place on the permanent Establishment It is obvious that such boys and even those who obtain Assistant Clerkships would have done better to take Telegraph Learnerships see next para- graph After passing the Boy Copyists' Examination no time should he lost in commencing preparation for Second Division Clerkships or the Excise Male Telegraph Learnerships Age 14-18 pay 12s week rising to £190 year with chances of further promo- tion -These are recommended to those who whilst hoping ultimately to gain Second Division Clerkship or Excise Appointment desire to secure at once place on the perma- nent Establishment In this latter respect these Appointments present considerable advantage as compared with Boy Copyistships But they do not afford equal facilities for study the hours being rather longer and not always the same Telegraphists obtain the same extension of age as Boy Copyists see preceding paragraph Second Division Clerkships New name for Men Clerkships -If early employment is not desired candidates for the Civil Service should aim at Second Division Clerkships age 17-20 salary £70 to £350 with chance of further promotion The competition is very severe and intending Candidates should therefore begin their preparation early not later than 16 unless they are preparing for Boy Copyistship Nearly nine-tenths of these appointments are in London Second Division Clerkships are often sought as affording fairly remunerative employment in London whilst preparing for
